At Buju Architects, we’ve explored this technology first-hand. Our team engaged with PrintCity, a leading 3D printing facility based at Manchester Metropolitan University, where we completed specialist training and gained formal qualifications in the use of 3D printing for construction and design. This experience has given us a deeper understanding of the technology’s real-world applications, as well as its limitations.
The latest innovations in 3D printing go far beyond small-scale models. Large-format printers are now capable of producing structural components, complex geometries, and even entire building elements. This allows for rapid prototyping, reduced waste, and the ability to test design ideas in a tangible, physical format before committing to full-scale construction. It also opens up exciting possibilities for sustainable construction, as 3D printing can minimise material use and incorporate recycled or low-carbon materials.
That said, 3D printing is not without challenges. Questions remain about cost-effectiveness, scalability, and how well the technology integrates with existing construction practices and regulations. For now, it is often best seen as a complementary tool, rather than a replacement for conventional methods.
So, is 3D printing in construction a fad or the future? The answer is somewhere in between. While it may not replace traditional building techniques anytime soon, it is increasingly becoming a valuable part of the design and construction toolkit—particularly in innovative, experimental, or sustainable projects.
