New Street, Altrincham

Overview We’re pleased to announce that a new-build development for 15 apartments in Altrincham’s town centre is due to be completed this year. Designed and constructed using Structural Insulated Panels means that the building is more energy efficient and airtight than traditional methods of construction. SIPs The use of Structural Insulated Panels is a modern alternative to traditional construction methods such as brick and blockwork. Often abbreviated to SIPs, this method consists of manufactured panels that typically comprises of a rigid insulation core, sandwiched between two layers of Oriented Strand Board or OSB. Due to the fact that the panels are factory made, means that the construction process is much more accurate and quicker to erect on-site. Throughout the design process we worked closely with the SIPs manufacturer to ensure that the panels and overall design was fully coordinated. This consisted of us sending drawings back and forth until the design was finalised and put into production. Once installed on site, the timber frame structure was then clad in brickwork and moss-grey aluminium cladding to create a contemporary and stunning aesthetic. We’re really excited to be part of this project and look forward to seeing it finished. If you’ve got a project that you want us to look at then don’t hesitate to get in touch! Sugar House, Knutsford

Buju Architects were instructed to design a new five-bedroom house on this site which sits on a quiet residential road in Knutsford, Cheshire. This new build in Knutsford has been designed to meet the bespoke lifetime needs of our client and their family. The goal was to provide a home that is comfortable but also easily adapts to the clients’ changing needs over the next twenty years. To provide this flexibility, the ground floor meets the requirements of an accessible and adaptable dwelling according to Building Regulations Part M. At the rear of the house is a large living room and bathroom which can later be converted into a bedroom suite to accommodate members of the family with mobility issues. The main entrance of the home leads to a bright and airy hallway with a glazed crittal-style door leading into the open-plan living room which opens out to the wildlife-filled garden through floor-to ceiling doors. The first and second floors contain five bedrooms and three en-suites. All bedrooms have generous-sized windows for maximum natural light in the rooms as well as good ventilation. We aimed for a design in character with the neighbouring properties, so kept the materials traditional with red brick and stone sills contrasted against darker features such as the window frames, front door and fascia boards. This creates a really sharp design whilst not being overly modern. Since initial discussions with the client, a key aspiration for the home was energy efficiency, which we have achieved through the new high-quality and well-insulated construction. We really enjoyed creating this modern and sophisticated bespoke design for our clients and look forward to sharing photos once the build is completed. Please get in touch to discuss your project.
Compstall Road, Romiley

After working closely with the Local Authority, Buju Architects have achieved planning permission and completed the technical design for 2 x new-build three-storey homes. Situated on Compstall Road in Stockport, these beautiful examples of contemporary architecture have an exterior to impress and a spacious interior, perfect for families. The plot was separated to provide two detached 5-bed dwellings with ancillary car parking, open space and a new access from Compstall Road. ‘ We chose Buju Architects because after talking to the team, it was clear they are an innovative and dynamic company, with a good track record of developing creative and individualistic buildings of the style we envisaged for our project.’Client Quote We have enjoyed guiding our client from the initial concept stage, through planning and we are now progressing the construction stage of the project. The restrictions of the site required us to take a creative and considered approach, with the design of the buildings and landscaping directly influenced by the topography. As a result, there are some level changes in the internal spaces including a step down to a spacious, open-plan kitchen/dining area that leads into the sloping garden The design and massing of the homes have also been carefully designed to minimise impact on the neighbouring buildings. The form of the buildings maximises daylight and views over the valley Incorporating cantilevered zinc roofs creates stunning shaded areas for the entrances, and dramatic glazed gables feature in the vaulted master bedrooms. With glazing throughout, the result is a contemporary light-filled home. We have balanced these modern features with a mix of natural materials in keeping with the beautiful landscape. Sustainability is also at the heart of the design, with an EPC A-rated classification, low energy bills and low CO2 emissions. These energy-efficient homes will have a highly insulated timber frame construction, airtight build, heat recovery, air-source heat pumps and a solar PV system Please get in touch to discuss your project Click here to download Compstall Road, Romiley. Delaford House, Worsley

We are excited to have recently submitted the planning application for this New-Build home in Worsley, Greater Manchester. Our key focus during the design process has been to create a stunning home for the Clients’ family, which also suits and enhances its quiet residential context. Since early discussions with the Client, the brief was to include an open-plan living space and five bedrooms. We gained a fuller picture of their needs through virtual meetings as well as a meeting on site, in which the importance of making the most of the wooded surroundings became clear. Through sharing example precedents with the client, we also came to a modern-traditional aesthetic. The positioning and footprint of the building is constrained to be in line with the street frontages, whilst leaving space for a large square garden at the rear. The conservative material palette was chosen to fit within the residential context, and the front elevation is defined by the Georgian bay windows, with stone detailing. Five well-sized bedrooms have been achieved through utilising the roof space. To keep in proportion with the neighbouring homes, this third floor is not noticeable from street view. The rear facade faces its own private garden, and large areas of glazing at ground floor allow a connection between the interior living space and the outdoors. To continue this principal in the upstairs spaces, one bedroom has a juliette balcony and another has its own wrap-around balcony, sat under the trees of the wooded boundary. Sheltered underneath this is a sociable outdoor kitchen with patio dining. A path from here leads to a seating space at the far end of the garden, which is positioned to make the most of the sun. Enhancing lives and exceeding expectations is always at the heart of our design process. With these high hopes, we look forward to the acceptance of our planning submission and to the construction of their new home! Download Case Study – Luxury Home, Worseley
The Lookout Point, Rhosneigr

Buju Architects was instructed to design 6 new holiday homes in the coastal village of Rhosneigr. Now four years later, construction nears completion. Consisting of a combination of 3 townhouses and 3 detached houses, each home is designed carefully to maximise sea views and sit comfortably in context. With just a short walk to the beachfront, it was quickly established early on that we wanted to take full advantage of these stunning coastal views. To achieve this, we decided to flip the floor layouts around and created an “upside-down home”. By positioning all of the bedrooms at ground level and the living spaces to the top floor meant that the amazing views could be fully appreciated from the high vaulted living spaces throughout the day. These views are also maximised by utilising large feature glazed gables each with their own spacious balconies. The feature gable on the detached houses were also carefully designed and specifically orientated at a 45-degree angle towards these views for maximum effect. A similar palette of materials was used as those of surrounding buildings and a strong design theme was created across the site. Local stone, cedar cladding and white render clad these fantastic properties. The density of development was carefully considered to allow enough space for access and amenity, whilst respecting local residents. Services: Buju Architects were appointed for RIBA Stages 1-6 as Architect and Principal Designer. From developing the concept design, through planning, tender and construction. Buju Architects coordinated the design process and managed correspondence with the local Council. “..Buju Architects produced three alternative schemes and once the preferred scheme had been chosen they very quickly produced several visualisation models which proved extremely helpful in view of the gradient and context of this development. Modelling at this early stage is often not provided and with a difficult site such as this can be vital in obtaining the correct interaction between buildings.” – Rockview Developments Download Case Study – The Lookout Point, Rhosneigr
Traeth Bychan, Benllech

Planning Permission submitted for Benllech development We are very excited to announce that we’ve recently submitted a Planning Application for 18 new residential units within the popular coastal village of Benllech, North Wales.Comprising of 9 apartments and 9 houses, this development aims to transform a currently derelict site into a vibrant and social place to live and holiday. Currently situated on the site is a partially demolished hotel that has been abandoned for many years. Our aim is to retain as much of the hotel’s original character as possible while infusing a new contemporary style to the site. Designed for permanent residents, the refurbished hotel will comprise of 9 apartments. During the design process, we were keen to maximise natural daylight and take full advantage of the views of the surrounding landscape. To achieve this, we’ve created 3 predominately glazed gables; each with their own spacious balcony and stylish French doors. In addition to this, we designed the building with accessibility in mind; ensuring that the main entrance has level access and that there is a lift facility across all of the floors. The entrance hallway will also feature 3 large roof lights that will flood the atrium in daylight; creating a warm and welcoming space. To complement the hotel conversion, we also designed 3 new buildings to encompass the 9 new houses. Targeted at the holiday home purchaser, we designed these houses to be contemporary and interesting whilst remaining respectful to their surroundings. During the design process, we decided we really wanted to emphasise the main entrances of the houses, so we opted for a feature angled recess entrance with integrated canopies. Additionally, on the first floor, we wanted to maximise the natural light to the landing area by introducing a combined window and roof light which helps to modernise the design. The ridge and eaves heights were also considered during the design process to ensure that the new houses were lower than the existing hotel, making them less imposing and more sympathetic to their environment.Internally, we wanted to maximise the feeling of space by utilising vaulted living areas and also make the most of the stunning scenery with large sliding glass doors and angled balconies to optimise the views. In terms of the overall site, we wanted to ensure that it’s an enjoyable and welcoming space to be. To achieve this, we’ve chosen to use locally sourced natural materials where possible and that there is plenty of softer landscaped areas The happiness and wellbeing of the residents is also very important to us. We wanted to ensure that the site is accessible by introducing disabled parking spaces and that it’s safe to navigate by creating a clear delineation between the pathways and tarmacked areas. We’ve also introduced a cycle storage area to help to reduce the reliance on using cars for travelling while the introduction of electric vehicle charging points helps to futureproof the site and make it more sustainable. Everyone here at Buju Architects has thoroughly enjoyed working on this project thus far and are very excited to develop it further in the coming months. If you’ve got a project that you’d like us to look at then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us!
High Street, Rhosneigr

An Architectural Transformation Located in the heart of Rhosneigr village on Anglesey, this High Street project involves the renovation and extension of an existing building, converting it into two spacious holiday rentals. This development is a significant positive transformation for the village, contributing to Rhosneigr’s tourism economy by providing high-quality accommodation with ample parking, all within close proximity to the beach. Challenges and Solutions The primary challenge of the project was to reimagine the existing commercial floor plans at ground level and maximise value for the site. Buju Architects approached this challenge by creating expansive open-plan living areas on the ground floor and by making the most of the existing building, minimising additional development costs. Design Concept and Process Our design concept revolves around creating two premium holiday homes, inviting families and friends to enjoy the charm of Rhosneigr village and its picturesque surroundings. The generous open-plan spaces serve as vibrant social hubs, complemented by comfortable bedrooms, en-suites and additional features such as a sauna, jacuzzi, and terrace. The architectural style is simple, to harmonise with the local vernacular – with white render accented by timber-effect cladding and recycled sea-glass, paying homage to the coastal setting. Architectural Service Buju Architects provided a comprehensive architectural service, including the exploration of various concept designs, preparation of drawings to secure full planning permission, coordination with engineers and creation of technical drawings for construction. Currently, we are in the process of finding a contractor for the project and eagerly anticipate its progression. Sustainability Focus In addition to its aesthetic appeal, sustainability is a key focus of the project. Buju Architects incorporated extra insulation and high-performance components to achieve a very sustainable renovation and extension. Furthermore, by repurposing the existing building instead of demolition, we significantly reduced the project’s embodied carbon footprint. This High Street project exemplifies Buju Architects’ commitment to innovative design, sustainability and quality craftsmanship. Contact us today to discuss your next architectural venture.

Wellington Road South, Stockport

Overview We’re excited to announce that we’re currently working on a mixed-use development in our hometown of Stockport. The scheme comprises of the conversion and extension of a disused pub, which will create 14 new apartments along with 2 ground floor retail units. Summary Situated by the historic Grade II* listed Plaza Cinema and ongoing Stockport Interchange development, the architectural aesthetics of the building have been carefully considered to sit within the town centre’s conservation area. The existing building is currently in a state of disrepair, with a large majority of the cement render and feature details falling off, as well as most of the windows being boarded up for safety reasons. Our intention is to strip off the remaining cement render and restore and repair the brickwork beneath. All of the existing windows will then be replaced with traditional looking windows to authentically replicate the aesthetic of the original building. In conjunction with the existing building, a more modern, curved brick extension will be added. This extension will feature dark aluminium window frames, along with areas of extruded brickwork detailing, adding value to the overall architectural aesthetic. This extension will also remain sympathetic to the existing building by replicating brick soldier course lintels over the windows and projecting concrete sills. The Challenge The site features extreme changes in levels, requiring careful consideration during the concept design process. The existing building consists of four storeys, all of which are visible from Mersey Square, however, only the upper two storeys are visible from the Wellington Road South elevation. In conjunction with this, the new extension will consist of five storeys, with the top of the parapet situated just below the existing gable chimneys. The connection between the existing building and proposed extension was studied in detail, as we were keen to minimise the requirement of steps within the circulation spaces of the apartments. We also wanted to ensure that we’re achieving level access around the perimeter of the building at ground floor level, for the various entrances and exits. We’re really excited to be part of this project and look forward to developing it further over the coming months.
